Every day marks of something new and that leaves it’s imprint on the pages of history. A new milestone is achieved or a new inventio is done, for the betterment of the future. just like this, let us read about some of the milestones achieved on November 24 over the years.
1642- Abel Tasman discovers Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania)
Born in 1603, Abel Janszoon Tasman, was a Dutch explorer and merchant. He had Famously known for his sea excursions during 1642-1644. Therefore, on November 24, 1642, he reached on to an island at the north of Macquarie Harbor. That is where he sighted the west coast of Tasmania. Although, earlier he called the island after Antonio van Diemen, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. However, late the name of the island changed to Tasmania, in his Honor. He became the first European to discover the island’s of Tasmania, Fiji and New Zealand.
1874- Joseph Glidden patents barbed wire
Joseph Farwell Glidden was born in Charleston, New Hampshire, USA, on January 18, 1813. He was an American businessman, who later invented the modern barbed wires. However, he created the barbed wire with the coffee mill and by twisting two wires together so that stay in place. Therefore, then on November 24, 1874, he received the patent for his invention. After receiving the patent, he establishes a factory for the same, Barb Fence Company in DeKalb, Illinois. By the time of his death in 1906, he became one of the wealthiest man in America with his asset value one million dollars!
1903 Clyde Coleman patents automobile electric starter
A device that helps to rotate internal-combustion engine so that it can be run under it’s own power. There can be three types of starters- electric, pneumatic and hydraulic. In 1899, Clyde J. Coleman designed an electric starter and applied for the patent. But the design had quite a few technical drawbacks, hence, declining the patent. However he worked on it and then again applied for the patent which he received on November 24, 1903.
Later in 1911, he sold his patent to Delco Company. Therefore, the engineer of the company made few modifications to the design and received a patent of the same in his name. The electric starter appeared in 1912, in Cadillac. Hence becoming the first car to have electric starter.
1969 Apollo 12 returns to Earth
Apollo 12 became the second crewed landing after series of lunar exploration tasks. It had set out to gather seismic, scientific and engineering data. The astronauts that went on this mission were- Charles Conrad Jr., Commander, Alan L. Bean, Lunar Module Pilot, Richard F. Gordon Jr., Command Module Pilot. It launched into the space on November 14, 1969, from Cape Kennedy. Apollo 12 ended the ten day flight of the moon on November 24, 1969. It splashed into the Pacific ocean.
1989 Sachin Tendulkar scores a Test Cricket fifty aged 16
Sachin R. Tendulkar was born on April 24, 1973. He is known as the best batsmen in the history of cricket. He represented Bombay in Ranji Trophy, when he was fourteen years old. In the November of 1989, Sachin Tendulkar made his first test debut at the age of sixteen years. He became the youngest player to be selected for the national team, at this very young age. He played his first match against Pakistan in Karachi. Therefore, in that very match, he scored his first international half-century.
