The Unsung Heroes of 2020

Unsung heroes are those people whose deeds towards society remain little or unacknowledged. This year has been tough on all of us. However, we were able to cope up with day-to-day work withstanding the pandemic conditions. It is not just us who are solely credible for our survival. While we worked from the comfort of our home, there stood the real warriors on the Covid frontline. With the upcoming New Year celebrations, let us remember these unsung heroes. In times like these, it is important to mark their heroism and resilience.

Medical faculties: The ultimate Covid-19 warriors

A medical professional is a person certified in the field of medical sciences. He is an integral part of our lives. Also, he certifies the two most important events of a person’s life. That is birth and death. A doctor uses his skills as a practitioner to prevent and cure diseases. During the pandemic, these sleep-deprived heroes are serving as the principal Covid frontline. Some went to their glory, to provide treatment to patients. They tried to save our lives as well. One of them is Livia Carrion.

She was the former director of epidemiology at the Institute of Public Health, Bolivar state, Venezuela. She died due to Covid-19 while treating the corona affected patients. Furthermore, she conducted tests and organized patient admissions. She had to retire 7 years ago. However, she chose to stay in the Epidemiology department due to the shortage of doctors.

Other heroic examples

Dr. Li Wenliang died due to Covid-19 during the initial days of the pandemic. He was a Chinese ophthalmologist who tried to warn his fellow practitioners about the outbreak of the virus. Unfortunately, no one believed him and accused him of spreading false information. He contracted the virus from a woman who was infected with the coronavirus, unknowingly.

Another example is Dr. Dongchen Zhou, a practicing cardiologist at Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. He went to Wuhan, the epicenter of Covid-19, for its cure and prevention. He was a part of the fourth group of doctors sent to China for providing relief and medical treatment. Along with his team, he took care of 1000 patients in the Wuhan Union Hospital Oncology center.

Reshma Mohandas is a nurse at the Medical College Hospital in Kottayam, India. She took care of two patients- one of them was 93 years old and the other 88 years (among the oldest Covid-19 survivors of India). Her patients transmitted the virus to her. However, she was determined to get healthy again and resume her work as soon as possible. She kept up to her promise, was discharged along with the other two patients, and resumed work.

Sanitation workers: The silent heroes in the fight against coronavirus

Sanitation workers are the people responsible for cleanliness, garbage emptying, and waste management at all points of the sanitation chain. They are the unsung heroes as their immense contribution towards fighting the pandemic is less valued in comparison to the other front liners. They are exposed to the deadly virus all day long with or without the PPE kits. In countries such as America, the daily waste has increased by almost 40%. It increases the sanitation department’s work as well as the related hazards. They, along with the waste collectors are working at par with the doctors. They do their work silently and diligently.

GMA (Good Morning America) honored three sanitation workers. They were Miah Love, Takisha Mapp, and Beverly Gresham, from the Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department. It is based in Georgia. They went above and beyond at their jobs amidst this pandemic.

The stout police officers helped the government take hold of the lockdown and pandemic conditions. Also, the credits for the implementation of social distancing goes to them. They worked continuously in the day and night shifts to maintain peace and decorum. Many a time, they had to sacrifice their sleep for their duty. The lockdown was a major challenge for police officials. However, they were conscious and stern. This ensured each and everyone’s safety.
After healthcare workers, they were the most affected by the virus. Still, they did not let their work suffer by any means. Along with performing their duties, they spread awareness about coronavirus and its sanitation measures.

Civilians: Contributing towards a Covid free world

During this pandemic period, each one of us is a Covid warrior in ourselves. Some stood out of the crowd. All because of their dedication towards their field. Also by some creative work. They motivated us and made us believe that we are unstoppable. The harsh conditions are not something which should affect our will to work. We must contribute to our part towards this fight as ‘United we stand, divided we fall.’

Teachers, heroes, Italy

Teachers in Campania, Italy took classes on the streets. They followed all the social distancing norms. Italy was one of the most affected countries due to the ongoing pandemic. The local authorities had closed schools till October end. The students urged their teachers to teach as they were struggling with their studies. The teachers yelled out their lessons on the streets. The pupils sat on the balconies and streets outside their homes to listen to it.

Aryan Gulati, a twelfth standard student from Delhi, India made an app called ‘Lung AI’. It can detect Covid-19 in just 3 seconds. It can also detect various other lung disorders. The app contains a list of nearby related doctors and hospitals if the test results positively.

Food and grocery workers

The food and grocery workers have also helped immensely during this period. They helped in the fulfillment of daily needs, food, maintained social distancing, and sanitation. The grocery suppliers didn’t make us feel any discomfort related to the ration needs. Other than the restricted period, they were always available for us every day.

These lesser-known people made our life easier during the pandemic. These heroes helped us in some or other manner. We dedicate this article to these saviors. And, we are thankful to them. Their sublime life inspires us to do something for society. Also, for the welfare and safety of the people.
