1570 1st atlas was published by Abraham Ortelius in Antwerp with 70 maps

The first published atlas was ‘Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’ (Theatre of the World). This was the first true modern atlas. The writer and publisher Abraham Ortelius was strongly encouraged by Gilis Hooftman.

1872 The Amnesty Act restored civil rights to Southerners

This was a United States federal law that was passed on May 22, 1972. This Act reversed most of the penalties imposed by former Confederates and prohibited the election or appointment to any federal or state office of any person who had held any of certain offices and then engaged in insurrection, rebellion, or treason. Congress passed the General Amnesty Act, restoring full political rights to all but about 500 Confederate sympathizers.

1882 The United States formally recognized Korea

The United States and Korea (Kingdom of Choson) engaged in their first official diplomatic interaction on May 22, 1882, when representatives of the two states signed a treaty of amity and commerce at Chemulpo, Korea. This was the first treaty Korea signed with a Western nation.

1906 The Wright brothers registered their flying machine for a U.S. patent

The Wright Brothers received a patent for their method of flight control after three years after 3 years of application, which they fiercely defended for years afterward, suing foreign and domestic aviators and companies, especially another U.S. aviation pioneer, Glenn Curtiss, in an attempt to collect licensing fees. They rejected the first application of 1903. In early 1904, they hired Ohio patent attorney Henry Toulmin.

1939 Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini signed the “Pact of Steel” in Berlin, Germany

The Pact of Steel is the Pact of Friendship, formally. And, also the Alliance between Germany and Italy. Basically, it was a military and political alliance between Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. It was initially a tripartite military alliance between Japan, Italy, and Germany.

2003 Annika Sörenstam became the first woman to play the PGA Tour in 58 years

This was at Fort Worth, Texas, in 2003, when Annika Sorenstam became the first woman to play the PGA Tour event in 58 years ever since 1945 when she shot a 71 in the first round of the Colonial. She missed the cut the next day by four shots. The year before, she became the first woman to shoot 59 and earn more than $2 million in one season.
