1818: Baron Karl von Drais de Sauerbrun patents “draisine”

A minor German noble patents a two-wheeled and foot-powered vehicle. It looks almost like a modern bicycle but it was missing some key components. Baron Karl Christian Ludwig von Drais de Sauerbrun also known as Drais von Sauerbrohn, was born in Karlsruhe in 1785. He studied at Heidelberg. He broke with his guardian’s already selected career choice of forestry to take up inventing. Therefore, on February 17, he received his patent for the same. 

1878: First telephone exchange in San Francisco

Telephones revolutionized communication as much as telegraphs did, but it was an unhurried revolution for all that. Two years post Thomas Watson heard through the receiver “Come here ! I need you !” from another city, a telephone exchange was set up on the West Coast. On February 17, 1878, the first major city telephone exchange came into operation, in San Francisco. Western Union, the telephone operator, was close to jilt the technology altogether, before changing their minds and constructing the telephone infrastructure.

1913: First minimum wage law in US passed 

On February 17, 1913, The Oregon Legislature passed the first minimum wage laws in the country. It stated to be unlawful to employ women or minors in any occupation within the state of Oregon for unreasonably long hours. It also said that it shall be unlawful to employ women or minors in any occupation under such surroundings or condition – sanitary or otherwise – as may be detrimental to their health or morals. An Industrial Welfare Commission established to scrutinize and declare what all the legislation had passed. They declared fifty hour per week, nine hour per day, fort-five minute lunch breaks and a weekly wage more than $8.64.

1933: First issue of American news magazine “Newsweek” published

Newsweek originated as a print publication in 1933 but briefly switched to an all-digital format in 2013–14. Founded by Thomas J.C. Martyn, a former foreign-news editor of Time, as News-Week. The early Newsweek offered a survey of the week’s news with signed columns of analysis. However, over time it became classed as one of the big three of American newsweeklies. Newsweek adopted a politically liberal viewpoint and expanded its coverage of popular culture, after its purchase in 1961 by Washington Post publisher Philip L. Graham. However, the first issue of the magazine dated February 17, 1933. However, in 2010 an American businessman Sidney Harman, bought the magazine.

1936: The world’s first superhero, The Phantom, appears in comics

Popular as “The Ghost Who Walks”, Phantom, the first costumed, fictional superhero. However,  Comics scholars believe that Superman was the first true superhero of the comic books. Even though the Superman wears an iconic costume, he was not the first heroic character to do so. That honor goes to Phantom, who clearly ushered in the superhero genre. Written by Lee Falk and drawn by Ray Moore, Phantom first appeared in King Features Syndicate on February 17, 1936.

1959: First weather satellite launched, Vanguard 2

Vanguard 2 launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 17,1959. Vanguard 2 (1959 Alpha 1) was an Earth-orbiting satellite designed to measure cloud-cover distribution over the daylight portion of its orbit. Moreover, it became the second successful Vanguard launch to orbit and the first cloud-cover satellite. The program objectives included measuring sunlight reflected from cloud cover and from the Earth’s surface.

 

2014: The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon premieres on NBC

An American late-night talk show hosted by Jimmy Fallon, The Tonight Show, on NBC. The show premiered on February 17, 2014. Broadway Video and Universal Television produced this show. It has become the seventh (and current) incarnation of NBC’s long-running Tonight Show franchise. Moreover, with Fallon serving as the sixth host. The show also stars sidekick and announcer Steve Higgins and house band The Roots.
