More than 700 million people over the world go without food and are famished every day. Yet, those who are blessed with food, water and the basic necessities, throw away the perfectly edible food. It is sad to say that over one-third of everything that we produce is wasted on an everyday basis. While the one-third of production is damaged without reason and we needlessly are wasting our limited natural resources. How we produce and consume food is the biggest threat to our planet today as food production has a massive impact on the environment.
What is Food loss?
Technically, food loss refers to the reduction in quality and value of food during its process in the food supply chain before it reaches its final product stage. Food that gets spilled, spoilt, or otherwise lost is removed from the human food chain and is considered as food loss or waste, even if it is then directed to a non-food use of bio-energy. The decrease in mass or nutritional value of food – edible parts – throughout the supply chain that was intended for human consumption has been tremendously increased persistently over the years. Thus, the quantitative and qualitative value of food is reduced to increased levels.
We are not just aiding to food loss but also generating huge amounts of food wastes at the point of consumption, either at restaurants or homes. Most of us are unaware of the fact that the uneaten food or wasted food winds up in landfills, where it rots and releases greenhouse gas emissions. This contributes to approximately eight percent of all global emissions. In this developing world where a larger portion of food is being lost or wasted without reason, there are millions of people who do not get food to eat/survive and are starved to hunger and eventually die.
Stop Food loss and Waste!
As we celebrate the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, we need to understand our role in food loss and waste to implement global efforts towards resolving it. Sustainable food production plays a fundamental role in promoting food security and nutrition.
Where food is lost and wasted daily, improvements are needed across all food systems to minimize impacts on the environment and to ensure that what we produce winds up where it is intended i.e. in the bellies of people around the world. We need a world where the true value of food is recognized and wastage is carelessly reduced to end hunger. Slowly but efficiently the measures for reducing food losses and waste have been on a rise since 2014. Hopefully, in the years to come, we achieve what we desire – A world free of food loses and waste, catering to a growing global population with reduced the pressure on our planet, abolishing the hunger among millions of people.
