As safeguarding the right to education for all the contributes, this day is celebrated. The State of Qatar along with 62 countries presented the resolution proclaiming the Day.
The future cannot be safeguarded if children living in conflict zones grew up without access to education and skills that they need to contribute towards their countries and economies, leading to the exacerbation of the already desperate situations of millions of families and children. Schools and the places of learning should be safe and secure and aims at safeguarding a child’s education. Today, it is the first time that we celebrate the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, i.e 9th of September, 2020. As the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a hit, the UN focuses on how to make schools and colleges a safe place and a place where education is kept at the top of the public agenda.
“As the world fights to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, children and youth in conflict zones remain among the most vulnerable to its devastating impact. We must ensure our children have a safe and secure environment in which to learn the knowledge and skills they need for the future.” – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres mentions.
Primary Goals –
To provide protection and ensure inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels to all learners, especially those in vulnerable situations must be the government’s primary responsibility, the UN states.
To refrain from actions that impede a child’s education instead facilitate access to education to children in situations of armed conflict.
Taking feasible measures to protect schools, learners, and education personnel from attack and to increase funding for the promotion of safe and protected environments in schools.
