1790: First successful US cotton mill begins spinning yarn
This was the first American cotton mill came into function on December 20, 1790. Located in Pawtucket, Rhode Island the mill had machinery(water-powered) for spinning and carding cotton. Therefore, it could cards cotton by untangling and combing fibers and pulling out undesirable fibers. Samuel Slater, using the designs of English inventor Richard Arkwright, built the first American mill .Slater somehow managed to fly anyway following his passion in America, though it was illegal and was against British law to leave the country if you were a textile worker. Later he came to ne known as the father of “the United States textile industry”. However, he eventually managed build many cotton mills in New England. Also, he established the town of Slatersville in Rhode Island.
1812: “Grimm’s Fairy Tales” by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm published.
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were two of eight children from their parents. The very first volume of the first edition was published in 1812. It contains 86 stories and then in 1815, the second volume consisting seventy stories was published. The KHM texts issued two volumes of the second edition in 1819 and in the third volume the Appendix had published separately in 1822, totaling 170 tales. Later on also stories added and subtracted from one edition to other until the seventh had 210 tales. Some editions, published later, were widely elaborated by Philipp Grot Johann. Therefore, after his death German illustrator Robert Leinweber continued it.
1963: Berlin Wall opens to West Berliners.
More than two years after the constructed of Berlin Wall by East Germany in 1837 to restrict the citizens from fleeing to west Germany. The day was marked by moments of poignancy and propaganda. The construction of the Berlin Wall in August 1961 separated families and friends. Tears, laughter, and other outpourings of emotions characterized the reunions that took place as mothers and fathers, sons and daughters met again, if only for a short time. The tensions of cold war could not remove far from the scene.
1974: “The Godfather Part II”, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, released
The Godfather movie series, directed by Francis Ford Coppola is an epic American Crime Film. Mario Puzo co-written the screenplay with Francis, it starred some of the greatest actors like, Al Pacino And Robert de Niro. The movie released in the United States on December 20, 1974, and received mixed reviews. It won the 47 Academy Awards and became the first sequel to win one. Also, it went to receive Six Oscars too.
2019: United States Space Force founded an armed forces branch
On December 20,2019, the U.S. Congress approved the formation of United Sates Space Force. Initially the USSF formed under Air Force Space Command on September 1, 1982. Led by the secretary of the Air Force, who reports to the secretary of defense, whom the President appoints with senate confirmation. Organized as a military service branch within the Department of the Air Force, it comes under the three military departments within the Department of Defense.
