The clock never stops, the hands keep rushing at their pace, and we need to keep up with them. Not every day brings in excitement and showers of joy, some days we stumble upon disappointments. But, to stay gloomy and embrace melancholy, or just shatter them with our smile, is all that comes from within. In simple words, we are sad when we choose to be. So, here we bring to you several reasons to make today count and celebrate each day. The Today column brings to you the reasons to celebrate each day!
Today we celebrate Grandparents Day honoring those who have showered our days and nights with love and joy!
Grandparents Day is recognized for the contributions of grandparents in our lives. Grandparents are society as well as family’s ties to their past as they pass on major values, beliefs, and ideals to future generations. Their wisdom and love are recognized every year on 13 September.
Why Do We Celebrate Grandparents Day?
Marian McQuade thought to establish a national day that would honor our grandparents, and in the early 1970s, she began a campaign to do so also. Marian raised awareness about senior citizens during the 1970s. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter declared 13 September as National Grandparents Day. Every year, the president announces to keep the tradition going on.
Grandparents Day also has both an official flower and song. Both were chosen by the National Grandparents Day Board. The official flower is the forget-me-not. The official song is Johnny Prill’s “A Song for Grandparents.
Grandparents Day Activities and Gifts
Most grandparents don’t care what activity you do, they just want to spend more time with their beloved grandchildren.
If you have a grandparent, ask them to show you one of their best things. Let your grandparents teach you a skill, like how to drive. Or, perhaps they enjoy morning walks. If your grandparent would prefer a calm day, ask them to play their favorite old 90’s song.
If your grandparent does not live nearby, call them or make a card for them. Even if the card doesn’t arrive on Grandparents Day, they’ll always appreciate a handwritten card which shows your feeling and love for them.
No matter what, the best Grandparents Day activity includes you and your grandparents together under one roof, celebrating with your family.
