It highlights the breakthrough for the Indian citizens as they witness their first draft of the Constitution. The day henceforth celebrates International Day for the elimination of violence against women and Indian Constitution Day.
International Day for the elimination of Violence against Women
We hear people saying that women are the architects of society. They bloom under both sun and rain. Within them is the power to create, nurture, and transform. It breaks the heart of any human to know that even today women are disrespected and are subjected to violence by the male counterparts.
High time we realize that masculinity is definitely not dominating. It is rather in stepping together hand in hand from the old to the new. Violence against women is an epidemic. Overall a greater percentage of women experience violence. The times are indeed changing and many countries around the globe have made laws governing the status of women against domestic violence and sexual harassment.
The year 1960 on November 25 witnessed the brutal death of Mirabal sisters of the Democratic Republic at the hands of a henchman of the then-dictator. The authorities shamelessly made the death look like an accident. The death of these three sisters eventually laid inspiration stones for the day. Subsequently, it was in 1999, that the United Nations General Assembly assigned November 25 as International Day for the elimination of violence against women. The day occurs sixteen days prior to International Human Rights Day. United Nations claims that 19% of women in the age group of 15-49 are victims of contemptible violence. This results in a huge setback mentally, emotionally, and physically on the lives of women. These days are to remind the people of the necessity of such days and how crucial the issue this.
How to Celebrate?
The day opens opportunities to educate yourself over such sensitive matters and further conducting meetings so as to raise awareness amongst the general public. People can participate in marches and activist movements to depict their support and solidarity. United Nations women hold the campaign over the years to orange the world. The motive behind is to promote gender equality in society. People can raise their voices in support through their social media handles. Sharing of photos, videos through hashtags amplifies the ordeal and raises voice against it. The day marks remembrance and activism in the form of marches, rallies, or meetings in the country. Women all around the world promote active participation in such events. It is the moral responsibility of a respected citizen of society to participate (either active or passive) in support of such events of transformation.
Indian Constitutional Day
The constitution is to a country what a sun to the sunflower. The constitution gives its people the direction to follow and the right to inherit as a responsible citizen of a country. Out of all the written constitutions of any country, Indian has the longest constitution. Dr. B R Ambedkar, popularly known as the Father of the Indian Constitution, was appointed the chairman of the committee for drafting the constitution on August 29, 1947.
Constitution Day in India aims to aware its citizens of the importance of the Constitution. In the official language of the country, the day is also known as “Samvidhan Diwas”
The constitution in India was adopted on 26th November 1949 by the Constituent Assembly of India. It came into effect after a year on November 26, 1950. This day is to promote and create awareness about the constitution. It was to perpetuate the pledge of Purna Swaraj (complete independence). Honorable Narendra Modi, the fountainhead of the country, declared November 26 as Constitutional day on 11th of October in the year 2015. It was the same day when the foundation stone for the Statue of Equality was laid in Mumbai. The preamble of the Indian Constitution underlines the values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. The constitution was a benchmark for India to claim itself as a successfully rising democratic nation.
