Each and every day we follow a timetable. Well, we do not always follow it to time. But we have a routine. When we have a routine, life may become mechanical. Let us look at some engrossing events today to step away from the daily routine. We have the National Vichyssoise day and Housing day today, November 18. Two engrossing events to do some mindful, relaxing, and helpful deeds.
Elegance, delicacies, and la Magnifique. The three words in the dictionary of french food. Most believe that the French are connoisseurs of food. That may be true. One of the famous delicacies is vichyssoise soup. Served cold, yet fulfilling. Made with simple ingredients, it has its own magic.
Like every food made, vichyssoise soup has its own story to tell. King Louis XV of France was known to be a lover of potatoes. So much that he preferred it in soups as well. But being fearful for his life, he made his servants taste the food before it was brought to him. This was done to avoid any poisoning. In 1917, a chef-prepared soup with potatoes, leek, chicken stock, and onion. He made this during a hot summer to keep the soup warm for customers. But his customers preferred it cold. Since then it became a cold dish.
How to celebrate
Well, isn’t it obvious how to celebrate it? Just cook up some yummy vichyssoise soup this November 18. Look up the recipe in some cookbook or even online. You can prepare it for yourself. Or you can invite some friends over for a potluck too. Enjoy the spirit of the french today.
Everybody wants to settle at some point. Get a nice home with a nice front porch. Retire peacefully. Live with children and grandchildren. But not all can achieve this. Homelessness has become a very serious problem in Canada. A lot of people suffer due to not having a roof on their heads. It is also considered a criminal problem too.
1998 declared homelessness a national disaster. It was also the year that marked the highest number of homeless people till then. Misconceptions about why homelessness persisted were broken. Most homeless are veterans. Some are ill. While some are runaways from homes where they faced domestic violence. On November 18, Toronto Disaster Relief Committee declared it as Housing day to help those in need.
How to celebrate
Be grateful for the roof on your head. Be grateful for the life you are living. Not all can afford that. Be kind to the homeless. If you can, reach out to committees and organizations and volunteer. If you see any homeless, contact authorities and help get them a safe place. Be humble and sympathetic. This is a good way to celebrate today.
