World Diabetes Day
Diabetes is a chronic dietary disease that happens due to the malfunction of the pancreas. As a result, the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin or it cannot use it effectively. Therefore, the absorption of the glucose in the blood increases, a condition known as hyperglycemia. In order to spread awareness about diabetes, we celebrate World Diabetes Day every year on November 14.
In 1991, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the WHO took the initiative to celebrate this day. We celebrate World Diabetes day on account of the birthday of Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin in 1922. Diabetes is an incurable disease. On the other hand, proper medicine and treatment can help to maintain it. There are two types of diabetes, type 1 diabetes, and type 2 diabetes. In type 1, the pancreas is unable to make a sufficient amount of insulin, required by the body. Whereas, in type 2 diabetes, the body is unable to process the insulin produced by the body. As a result, the glucose level in the blood rises up in a fatal amount.
How to Celebrate
People suffering from diabetes experience a lot of issues in their day to day life. To raise awareness among people is important. Therefore, many activities like awareness campaigns and several sports events are organized every year to mark this day. The theme of this year’s celebration is “The Nurse and Diabetes”. To educate the nurses about diabetes and the problems that come with it. As they are the helping hands of the people suffering.
