International Data Privacy Day
This decade has been the time of emerging technologies such as AI and machine learning, but it has also seen the rise of crime in an unorthodox area “Data”. Yes, Data is the big business in the market. Every second of the day processes our data. From the groceries we buy, to the work we do, from our likes to dislikes, health to wealth, there is collection and observation of every single piece of data. It can be intimidating for individuals. However people do not know the steps they can take when their data is violated. Thus, we celebrate International data privacy day to educate everyone about the importance and ways to safeguard data.
Data Protection Day commemorates Jan. 28, 1981, signing of Convention 108. It was the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection. Convention 108 is the instrument from which the right to data protection was taken seriously. In April 2006, The Council of Europe announced Jan 28 as International Data Privacy/Protection Day.
How to celebrate?
We, the frequent users of tech, should educate ourselves more about the uses of data. Moreover we should “own our privacy and respect the privacy of others”. We can ensure our data protection by using private encrypted browsers, double-checking the privacy settings, Using more strong passwords, look-out for vulnerabilities in network-sharing and Bluetooth, back-up your data using reliable software/hardware, and securing wireless networks at home/offices. This is all about the right to be left alone without intervention.
