December 1 is internationally recognized as the world AIDS day. To spread awareness among people about this life threatening disease, the UN has designated it to be celebrated on December 1 every year. Along with this, we also celebrate eat a red apple day today. World AIDS Day
Ever since 1988, World AIDS day has appointed to be celebrated on December 1. AIDS stand for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, caused by life-threatening HIV virus. Therefore, the virus attacks on the the immune system of the person and prohibits the immune system to fight other disease. The main reason for why it became an international day was to raise awareness. And also, to abolish the stigma revolving around it amongst the people.
James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, two public information officer, came up with the idea of observing this day on an international level. Upon taking their idea to the Director of the Global Program on AIDS, Dr. Jonathan Mann, loved the idea. He accepted it and agreed to it. Hence, he also like the idea of it to be celebrated on December 1. As it will be getting a full media coverage before the Christmas holidays as well as US elections.
Many myths and stigma revolve around this disease. One of the major myth was that you can get AIDS if you come near a person suffering from this. Due to which many people lost their lives. HIV/AIDS can be transferred from one person to another only via sharing a needle or sexually, not by touching.

Every year the celebration has a theme which it promotes. Therefore, this year, the theme for World AIDS day is- “Global solidarity shared responsibility”. All the UN Member states celebrate this day. Many campaigns are organized to raise awareness and educate people. A red ribbon symbolizes the World AIDS Day. Hence you can pin up a red ribbon or just simply wear red clothes to promote this day. You can also work on spreading the awareness by posting about it on social media.
