Some people regard history as a mere subject, something to be comprehended in a classroom. Or, just thick textbooks containing numerous stories and books. But, history has its importance beyond mid-term school examinations. History is a tale of transformation over time. Also, it shows us the consistency in human disposition. It is beneficial for everyone as history exemplifies humanity. Today, we will glance at various important firsts of the history of January 9. And, a quick overview of each event.
1792: Russia and Turkey sign the Peace of Jassy.
The Peace of Jassy was a pact signed at Jassy in Moldavia on January 9, 1792. The pact was between Russia and the Ottoman Empires. It was an outcome of the Russo-Turkish war in 1787 – 92. It validated the domination of Russia in the Black sea. Grand Vizier Koka Yusuf Pasha and Prince Bezborodko signed it. Also, the treaty of Jassy formally acknowledged the Russian Empire’s annexation of the Crimean Khanate by the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca. And, it disseminated the Dniester to Russia.
1881: First women’s golf tournament held in Scotland.
On January 9, 1881, the first-ever recorded golf tournament for women took place. The tournament took place in a town located at Musselburgh, East Lothian, Scotland. They organized it for the regional fisherman’s wives of Musselburgh and Fissherow, a neighboring town. The Musselburgh golf club had arranged for the event. The golf clubwas an eighteen-hole pitch and putt course. The victory reward was a creel and a shawl and runner-ups received two handkerchiefs from Barcelona.
1839: Louis Daguerre captures the first photograph of a person.
Louis Daguerre, a French artist, and a photographer captured the very first photograph of a human. It was with the help of his invention, the Daguerreotype photo process. Other types of images required up to eight-hour exposure. But, his photo plate needed 10 minutes. He took a snapshot of a street of Boulevard du Temple in Paris, France. It bears two men at the bottom left quadrant of the photograph. Also, one man can be seen polishing the shoes of the other. However, the photo plate couldn’t photograph other people on the street as they were in motion.
1894: New England Telephone and Telegraph installed the first battery-operated telephone switchboard.
On January 9, 1894, New England Telephone and Telegraph installed the primary battery-operated switchboard. It was introduced in Lexington, Massachusetts. Later, people referred to it as the common battery. It replaced the telephone’s local battery. Through this, the telephone subscriber could signal the operator. He had to simply lift the receiver from its hook. Also, the 1911 edition of the Britannica Encyclopedia started that with this improvement operator time per call reduced. Furthermore, the call time curtailed from 50.77 seconds to 16.63 seconds.
2007: Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs announces the iPhone.
Steve Jobs founded the iPhone corporation with his companion Stephen Wozniak in California in 1976. It is one of the world’s most valuable corporations. On January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone as a touchscreen phone with an iPod. Furthermore, he described it to have a camera and web browsing facilities along with other features. The Macworld convention in San Francisco was the venue for its announcement. Also, they claimed the iPhone to be a product that was five years ahead of other phones.
