1820: Continent Antarctica Discovered
The Continent of Antarctica has its history circles around a Russian expedition. The expedition was led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev. They discovered an ice shelf at Princess Martha Coast. This made the two explorers first to spot and discover the land of the continent of Antarctica. However, prior to this discovery, the history of the continent was revolved around the western theories of a vast continent. It was Terra Australis which was believed to exist in the far south of the globe.
The term “Antarctica” is to refer to the opposite of the Arctic Circle. Marinus of Tyre coined the term in the second century AD. Nevertheless, the gorgeous land of the continent is, otherworldly, like nothing one could have ever seen before. It is indeed stark, cold, and beautiful desolation.
1880: Edison patents electric incandescent lamp
“I have not failed. I have just found ten thousand ways that do not work.” The prodigal inventor Thomas Elva Edison who is widely popular owing to his contributions in the world today. The scientist is credited for his various inventions that are inclusive of the phonograph, the kinetoscope, the dictaphone, the electric lamp (incandescent light bulb), and the autographic printer. His creations had been a breakthrough in the communication world altogether.
It was on January 27, 1880 that he receive a patent for his invention of electric incandescent lamp. In this prolific journey as an inventor, Edison is not only credited for his ideas and innovations, but also for improvising the existential inventions and making them better. Moreover, at the beginning of the twentieth century, Thomas Elva Edison managed to received a total of seven hundred and twenty six United States Patents for his innumerable inventions. Furthermore, the total number of U.S. Patents credited to his name were one thousand and thirty-nine.
1888: National Geographic Society Founded In Washington D. C.
Science makes people reach selflessly for truth and objectivity: it teaches people to accept reality, with wonder and administration. Not to mention the deep joy and awe that the natural order of things brings to the true scientist.
The National Geographic Society, till date, is among the largest non-profit educational and scientific organizations in the world. It has its headquarters in the Washington D. C. This didactic society has its foundation dated on January 27, 1888. The interests are inclusive of domains in geography, archeology, and natural science. Moreover, it aims at the promotion of historical and environmental conservation, and also the study of world culture and history.
1926: Schrodinger Wave Equation Published
Erwin Rudolf Josef Alexander Schrödinger, or popularly known as Erwin Schrodinger, was an Austrian-Irish physicist. He was a Nobel-prize winning scientist who has credited in his name multitudinous fundamental results in quantum theory. One of his greatest inventions is the Schrodinger Wave Equation. The equation presents a way to calculate the wave function of any system. Moreover, it describes how wave functions changes dynamically with time.
Schrodinger postulated this equation in 1925. It was published an year later in 1926. Moreover, this formed the pathway to his winning the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933.
2013: Magnus Carlsen wins Tata Steel Chess Tournament
Chess is Everything – Art, Science and Sport. For in the idea of chess and the development of the chess mind, we have the picture of the intellectual struggle of mankind. It is indeed a very logical game. It is thus the man who can reason most logically and profoundly in that, ought to win. Such is the winner, Magnus Carlsen, Chess Grandmaster.
Tata Steel Chess Tournament is an annual event occurring each year in January. The events calls for grand masters from around the world and also for club players. They compete against the best of best chess prodigies in the Round-Robin Tournament. With a total of seven titles credited to his name, Magnus Carlsen holds the record for the maximum number of wins. Moreover, Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand ranks second for winning five titles and the player to win for most consecutive times.
